Policy FAQ

Does the export control policy apply to me?

Export controls are federal laws and regulations that govern exports of certain commodities, technologies, services, and money to foreign countries. Export controls also regulate disclosures of certain kinds of information—including research data—to non-U.S. persons. Some exports and disclosures require special permissions (usually in the form of a license) from a federal agency. Please visit Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research’s Export Control page for more information. Export control questions can be directed to: exportcontrols@illinois.edu.

Am I required to work with any offices on campus when developing an education abroad program?

Faculty and staff interested in leading a study abroad program must work with their college study abroad office. All student travel to high risk destinations requires a mandatory review from International Safety and Security. Review the Short-Term Programs pages for next steps.

Who should I contact about international agreements and contracts?

International Safety and Security evaluates international agreements together with Global Relations in Illinois International. Agreements between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and foreign partner institutions can range from non-binding letters of intent to formal, legally binding contracts that obligate one or both partners to perform specific actions or provide specific services to the other. Visit the International Agreements page on the Illinois International website to learn more about these types of agreements.
